Setting: Lissa in the Wiki and the book on other wiki.

History:

Vasilisa “Lissa” Dragomir was born into the Dragomir family, once of the twelve royal families of the Moroi society. Moroi vampires are, long story short, good vampires. They get born, they age, they get kids and they die; they even have elemental magic, controlling earth, air, water and fire. They need to drink blood, but not as much as needed to kill someone. They don’t stand the Sun too well, but there is no going up in flames for them. And while they are mostly a democracy of sorts, they have a Queen and royal families to ruler and make choices. Being a royal immediately puts a wedge on anyone’s life, and it was no difference for Lissa; she was automatically popular and loved by everyone, although her natural charisma helped her greatly. Lissa’s unwavering friendship with Rose Hathaway and overall lack of disdain for everyone not royal set her apart, but when you came from one of the most important families you actually had enough power to be a little different.

Lissa’s life was pretty standard for a Moroi for the first years of her life, but tragedy soon would come knocking down the door in the form of a traffic accident that took the life of her parents, brother and Rose; the shock of seeing her best friend dead awakened Lissa’s power over the element of Spirit, long forgotten and extremely rare, and using it to bring Rose back to life, forging a psychic bond between them and turning Rose into a shadow-kissed; one that had died and been brought back. The accident also turned Lissa into the last living member of the Dragomir royal family, making her something of a weird presence within the moroi world.

At any rate, Lissa and Rose were forced to resume their studies, the bond slowly growing between them as Rose realized she could feel Lissa’s emotions, and sometimes even see the world from her perspective, something neither of them appreciated. Lissa’s awakened power kept on manifesting too, though, and with it Lissa’s already compassionate self found a way to heal whatever hurt animal that crossed her path. It didn’t seem to cause much trouble at first, but Lissa’s health started to gradually deteriorate, becoming more erratic and irritable as time passed, paranoia and fear settling in without any apparent reason. Things got to an abrupt end when Lissa started to receive threats and dead animals in her room, which ultimately prompted her to start cutting herself. By the timely intervention of a teacher that secretly was a Spirit user as well, the already unstable Ms. Karp, Rose was forced to escape the school with Lissa and forget about it until later.

VAMPIRE ACADEMY

Two years after running from school, Rose and Lissa are getting by the best they can without calling too much attention to themselves. Rose now serves as Lissa’s blood donor, something that’s seen as sacrilege in their society, and they are usually on the move. Things come to an abrupt end when a group of Guardians manage to find them and capture them, bringing the girls back to the school. Once there, Lissa and Rose are forced to reintegrate the student body, although they are fairly behind in terms of training and study. Lissa has an easier time for the most part, as she retains some of the fame and respect from the past years, not to mention she still is the last Dragomir alive.

Over the course of a few weeks, Lissa and Rose are forced to wade through the avatars of going to a high school stock full of snotty royals that happen to be vampires and all the common crap high school generally has: dealing with the new Queen Bitch, Mia (who also became Lissa’s ex new girlfriend), the fact everyone thinks Rose has been letting Lissa feed of her, classes in general (although Lissa proves that she’s still quite a bookworm by quickly getting up to date) and the fact there is still someone tormenting Lissa with dead animals.

Not all is horrible though, as Lissa makes a connection with Christian Ozera, mostly known to be a troublemaker and the son of two moroi royals that willingly turned themselves into strigoi by draining someone completely of blood, the other way to become one being to get sucked all of one’s blood from a strigoi and then drink their blood. Whatever the case, both of them lacking parents and feeling out of place, they become some like kindred spirits, with hints of maybe something else. Rose sabotages any chance of them getting anywhere though, and when Lissa starts using her ability to compel people into do whatever she says to regain her former glory (partly to make people stop treating Rose badly), the wedge between them grows over time.

Lissa finally learns about Spirit, as well as the detrimental effects it has on her, and unknowingly on Rose. They also learn what means to be shadow-kissed. There is a small pause to the terribleness of Lissa’s life as she and Christian decide to give each other a chance (after making Rose explain just what had she done) and they start to publicly dating, much to a bunch of people’s surprise. Things keep getting worse for Lissa though, who is forced to heal Rose after getting a broken ankle, sending her over the edge and making her cut herself in her desperation. Information about this is kept under wraps for as long as possible, but it eventually reaches Mia’s ears, who accuses Lissa to cut herself and being unstable, which in turn causes Rose to break Mia’s nose, in a typical “Rose punches her problems away” sort of way. This gets them separated for long enough to have Lissa kidnapped and brought over to a familiar face of her, namely the “uncle” of her “cousin” Natalie, her roommate and another good friend, Victor Dashkov.

Victor proceedes to torture Lissa and explain to her that he needs her to use her Spirit magic on him, as he suffers from Sandovsky’s Syndrome, which makes him far weaker than he should be at his age, and therefore deprives him for the chance to rule the Moroi. Lissa refuses repeatedly but eventually gives up to the torture and heals him for the time being, after which she is confined in the house she was bought into. Unaware that Rose and company are coming to her rescue, Lissa manages to escape the house, only to be cornered by psy-hounds, special mind hive-like hunting dogs ordered to keep her from leaving. Rose and Christian, who had sneaked in with Rose manage to find Lissa and fight the hounds away, but Christian is wounded. Being completely drained of power, Rose offers Lissa her blood, which she takes and then uses to heal Christian, passing out soon afterwards.

Lissa later learned of Victor’s escape attempt and Natalie’s fate, whom she had previously learned was the one leaving dead animals for her to find, always following her father’s indications, and ultimately turning herself into strogoi.

FROSTBITE

Now fully aware of her abilities and the toll they take on her, Lissa starts taking medication to keep her depression away, which also blocks her Spirit magic. Rose goes with Dimitri to meet the guy that would help Rose to take her Qualifier exam, a need if she wants to become a full-fledged Guardian. After news of the massacre on the site they were supposed to meet him reach the school, it’s decided that all the students were to be moved to a lodge on the mountains, on a luxurious ski resort owned by a moroi family.

There is another attack, in which is revealed that Mia’s mother is among the deceased. Lissa later meets Adrian Ivshkov, another royal moroi, but most importantly, the only other living Spirit user she knows (Ms. Karp doesn’t really count as she turned herself into strigoi to find release the madness her powers caused her). Lissa and Adrian become fast friends and decide to teach each other what they know, as Adrian seems capable of walking into people’s dreams, while he doesn’t seem capable of healing like Lissa.

Lissa doesn’t see much of Rose, as she and other dhampirs, as well as Christian and Mia go strigoi hunting after Rose accidentally tells Mason (another young dhampir) about the supposed location of a nearby strigoi cave. She and Rose are finally reunited after Rose is brought back and learns of how she killed two strigoi by herself.

SHADOW KISS

Things are still a little shaken, but the students go back to the school after spending Christmas over the ski resort, and the dhampirs prepare to take their Qualifying Exam, which is the second one they usually take, and that Rose is allowed to take on account of her killing two strigoi. Both Rose and Lissa are fairly certain they will both be paired together, as the Exam is about having a Guardian protecting a Moroi for the rest of the school term, but Lissa is surprisingly assigned to Eddie Castile, another dhampir that was captured with Rose and company, while Rose is assigned to Christian, her boyfriend.

Rose keeps Lissa in the dark about a bunch of things thorough the book: the fact her use of Spirit magic is also affecting Rose, sometimes exclusively her, the fact Rose has feelings for Dimitri, the fact Rose has started to see ghosts…which doesn’t really drive them away, but ultimately makes their time together more strained. Adrian moves to the school as well, although he is a college student, and continues training with Lissa. She and Rose keep seeing each other as Christian and her are dating, but they have fewer chances to be together as before.

Lissa, Rose and the rest of the gang (including a now changed Mia) manage to learn from Dimitri that Victor, who had been held under custody all this time, will be judged soon, and they managed to get themselves sent over the Court thanks to Adrian’s connections so that they can be there and give testimony. Lissa, Rose, Dimitri and Christian give testimony and Victor is condemned to vampire prison, after which they are booked to get flied back to the Academy. Once again, Rose keeps from Lissa that the current Queen, Tatiana, plans to have her marry Adrian, her own grandniece, and that she will eventually have to break up with Christian. Before returning to the Academy though, the girls find themselves with some time, so Lissa takes Rose to get a manicure and pedicure, something the rough life of a Guardian rarely gives time for. There she tries to hook her up with a dhampir boy working there, who is also the Queen’s personal blood bag (or blood whore, as dhampirs that give blood during sex are called as a derogatory term). The boy, Ambrose, takes them to a dhampir that reads cards, and gives them a reading, although it’s hard to understand, and then they return to the Academy.

While flying, Rose gets a crippling headache and starts “hallucinating” with ghosts to the point she passes out once they land, as Rose’s visions worsen. She’s then took off full time examination for her Qualifier, but still manages to defend herself when attacked, earning points. Meanwhile, Lissa had been deflecting other moroi asking her to join them on some sort of secret group, but after talking to Rose about how some other moroi are getting hurt she agrees so that she can spy on them. What she didn’t know was that the others are trying to find moroi that are good at compulsion, and therefore torture the new recruits to see which ones have more talent. Lissa snaps in both anger and pain, forcing one of her attackers to hallucinate being covered in spiders without being able to move, and is only stopped when Rose finds her and takes the toll of the compulsion onto herself, entering a Spirit induced rage so strong she starts beating another culprit to death, being stopped at the last moment by Dimitri, who takes her away.

Lissa is taken away, and hours later strigoi invade the school. The other Guardians were forewarned though, as Rose’s perception of ghosts allows her to deduce the wards that protect the school are being weakened, thus allowing the strigoi to enter, and a massive battle ensues. While Lissa sees nothing of it, she and Adrian later do rounds healing people with serious injuries, but making sure to not overexert themselves. The battle in the school also marks the first time a moroi had fought alongside a Guardian in several hundred years, with Christian teaming up with Rose and taking down several strigoi. Lissa and Adrian would later go with a group of Guardians and other moroi to the caves where the strigoi had taken victims nearby in order to heal whoever needed assistance, and she receives news of Dimitri’s apparent death.

Lissa and Rose would have a fall off soon after, as Rose learns that Dimitri’s body hasn’t been found, which means he was turned into strigoi. Rose is decided to leave the academy in order to hunt him down and keep their mutual promise of not allowing the other to live as strigoi. This is when Lissa learns about their secret romance, as well as the effects that Rose was suffering were derived from her. Lissa tries to persuade Rose, but she ultimately leaves her and formally signs herself out of the Academy.

BLOOD PROMISE

After Rose left, Lissa was left to deal with the sadness and grief of seeing her best friend walking away from her. She didn’t have all that much time to wallow on it though, as Queen Tatiana made sure to keep her busy inviting her over the Court now and then to make her run errands and be around her, as well as to keep her away from Christian.

Lissa comes shortly after learning that Director Kirova is stepping down from her position on the Academy and a new person, a royal with a daughter that has been suspiciously appointed to be around her will be taking over.

Personality:

Lissa is a bleeding heart, and this is her most defining trait. She has a natural predisposition to help others, and will put herself in danger for the sake of doing good. Her natural connection to Spirit magic makes her even more aware of the life around her and whenever it’s affected, thus driving her to use it even if it means suffering for it down the road. That said, Lissa is hardly an idiot, and while her desire to heal and protect feels somewhat compulsive at times she’s perfectly capable of controlling herself when needed, as she knows there is a prize to pay after all.

She’s incredibly intelligent, being a straight A’s student and a ridiculously proficient on multitasking, as well as being perfectly capable to navigate adverse social environments with charisma and wit. Her Spirit magic gives her an inherent charisma, but Lissa is completely capable of fending people’s words by herself, usually betraying the deceiving meek and delicate look she has. She is sensible and quiet, but not weak. Lissa is more at east when she doesn’t need to force her way into being accepted, usually preferring the company of her few true friends than the troubles that come with mingling with wannabe politicians and the real deal.

Being the last of her family represents an incredible weight on Lissa’s shoulders, and while she carries it with dignity and honor she’s no immune to the constant scrutiny and comparisons being drawn between her and the rest of her family, as well as being reminded that yes, everyone else in her family is dead. She sees being the last of the Dragomir as a challenge, but she doesn’t resent her fate. What she lacks on physical aptitude, Lissa makes up in spades in integrity and inner strength, a necessity in her world. She also knows that her family name inspires both respect and jealously, and therefore knows how to use it to further her goals. While she’s a fanatic of rules, Lissa is intelligent to the point of knowing that rules sometimes must be bent, and she’s not scared of using her skills to get what she wants.

Among the moroi, Lissa is a bit of a revolutionary thinker, as she’s one of the few royals that think there shouldn’t be as many differences between them and non-royals, as well as being a supporter of moroi learning how to fight; Lissa herself doesn’t train her elemental magic to hurt as her connection to Spirit makes her more susceptible to violence, not to mention the aftereffects of using Spirit or simply letting her emotions run wild (ranging from depression to self-mutilation and what looks a lot like the beginnings of schizophrenia). Still, Lissa falls moderately good into the “Mary Sue” character type, as she’s usually described as being proficient at many things, popular, yet tortured by a tragic past and possessing a special and incredibly weird power. Lissa makes a difference by actually being useful and having a sensible streak that helps keeping other characters in line, as well as actually having limitations and knowing how to work through them.

And yet, for all her good points, Lissa does have a few weak spots. The constant use of Spirit has affected and does keep on affecting her sensibility. An emotionally vulnerably person to begin with, Lissa has developed something of a short fuse over the years, and not only when it comes to anger, although whenever she rages, she rages spectacularly. Lissa is prone to go with her emotions, either letting high levels of happiness cloud her judgment or the weight of depressing matters cripple her ability to act on her own. Because of this, Lissa has shown to be very clingy to the people she trusts the most, namely Rose. Even though Lissa tries to be strong, it's second nature for her to stand behind her friend and Guardian whenever danger arises. She's not a fighter, and she doesn't try to be one, but it sure is damn inconvenient when action is needed. This doesn't stop her from being brave, but unless she's no a debate it doesn't really give her an edge when it comes to protecting herself.

Probably because of her time with Rose, Lissa lacks the generalized disdain royal vampires regarding non royals and dhampirs. It's usually accepted that moroi royalty shouldn't need to fight or know how to protect itself, leaving dhampirs to do all the job out of some warped sense of loyalty. There is also the conception that non-royal moroi are inferior and shouldn't have a say in the matters of the moroi society, and that empowering them would only cause internal strife as they would try to take over. Lissa however, is an advocate of letting everyone have a fair chance, as well as giving dhampirs more credit for their hard work. She tends to have a polarizing effect on royals; there are those that see in her a refreshing change of views that's very much needed to survive, and those like the current Queen Tatiana that are stuck in the past to the point as seeing her as a threat to their lifestyle. Lissa's differing views make her all the more compassionate and tolerant, but her milder viewpoint also make her more vulnerable to have her loyalties called into question.

In the future, Lissa will become the new Queen, and will push forward a change in the way things work in moroi society.

Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:

Moroi physiology: Moroi are living vampires. They need to eat and they age just like regular people, but they also need to drink blood in order to survive. Other than the fact they have fangs, Moroi are completely indistinguishable from humans. They do tend to be tall, pale and slim.

(+) Spirit Magic: Lissa is specialized in Spirit Magic, which allows her to command the living energy on herself to a variety of effects, such as

(+) Super - Compulsion: All vampires can force others to do things simply by looking then in the eyes and giving them an order, but most moroi are too untrained and underpowered that they rarely use it. A Spirit user possesses a highly advanced version of compulsion though, allowing Lissa to easily compel not only humans, but also other dahmpir (which is harder than compelling a human) moroi (which is something considered impossibly by more moroi). Lissa’s compulsion is so strong that she can straight up throw someone into a hyper-realistic illusion of her desire.

(+) Healing: Lissa can use her life force to heal the wounds of others. Anything from a scratch to the brink of death (and in Rose’s case, death itself) can be healed relatively easy if she has the amount of energy available. Physical contact is needed for it to work.

(+) Aura Sight: A newly acquired ability, Lissa can see the auras surrounding others. She’s still learning to tell the difference between the colors that surround a person, but has the basic knowledge to know when someone has magic and most importantly, when someone is using it, as well as being capable of telling between extreme emotional states.

(+) Elemental Magic: Fire, Air, Earth and Water. Lissa has an above average control over these elements, but not to the extent of someone specialized in one of them. She doesn’t use them much though.

(+/-) One way psychic link: Lissa and Rose are linked in such a way that Rose can always know where is Lissa with accuracy depending on how close they are, as well as how is she feeling and what is she thinking. Rose can also “jump” into Lissa’s mind, becoming capable of experiencing the world through Lissa’s point of view, although she can’t interfere. Lissa has no access to Rose’s mind though, but she has learned to “think” towards Rose, thus creating something of a one sided telepathic link that only Lissa can use.

(-) Insanity: The use of Spirit magic drains Lissa of her own life force, which has the main effect of weakening her physically, and then mentally. Overexertion first causes depression, sudden mood swings, and then paranoia, delusions and self-destructive tendencies, all which worsen as time goes by. It can be healed either by stopping the use of Spirit for an extended amount of time or by being “sucked” through a psychic link, in which case the shadow kissed partner (Rose) will suffer from the effects, although these can be easily healed once they leave the Spirit user.

While Lissa had intuitively known it wouldn’t be the same, the moment she learned there was a library inside the ship she had headed there. It was a far cry from the enclosed, dusty yet cozy spot she had over the church back at Saint Vlad’s, but at least it was filled with books and felt a lot less like a space ship going God knew where. That was all Lissa asked for the moment. Just some peace and quiet and books. And maybe Christian, but Christian wasn’t there for her. Lissa didn’t know if she wanted him to go through waking up there though, so maybe it was for the best has boyfriend hadn’t been dragged into it.

And anyway, there were tons of interesting books for her to pick and distract her from having to cope with her situation. Lissa wasn’t a fan of deflecting her issues, but this one was slightly larger and more bizarre than most of the problems she had had to deal with in the past. She at least knew she wasn’t going insane, and that was a relief. Hallucinations would have been a really nasty addition to the things she had to fear for overusing her magic.

One book shortly turned into two, and two into three. She read about history in other places, about plants that grew in remote corners of the world, about wars waged thousands of years before her time, and also noticed there was nothing about vampires other than silly fictional tales and myths that had little to do with what she knew. Odd. By the time Lissa felt like she was ready to deal with the real world, she had built a book fort around her. “Oh,” she managed to say as she stood up slowly and tried to walk out of the book make barrier without throwing them off. “I need to order these.” Yes, she was going to tidy up and then deal with the world. Worlds. Because it didn’t matter where she was, Lissa wasn’t the kind to leave a mess behind.

It also bought her time.

I have given this some thought, and I guess it’s better if I ask it right now.

How many vampires are on the ship? I think we should all meet up and discuss our differences. From what I can tell, not everyone seems to have the same abilities. There is also the fact there are two kinds of vampires in my world, and it would be useful to know just where others fall when compared with the kinds I know. Does any of you age? Can you stand under the sun? Use magic? The more we know of each other, the easier we can get along.
